This is a good posting from the VN boards on the effect of Melee Styles Defense Penalty and Bonus Effects on Evade/Parry/Block.

Melee Test 09/17/2003 - Testing PvP/RvR Wpn Style Defense Penalty/Bonus Effects on Evade/Parry/Block

INTRODUCTION & DISCLAIMER:

Greetings! Since I have questions of my own regarding certain aspects of melee combat in DAoC, I have decided to conduct some tests of my own to give me an idea of how certain things work, & also how effectively they work. I am sharing the data and/or results here for those interested. This information is NOT to be taken as a bible on DAoC mechanics, only my observations & theories based on data I have tested & reviewed. Feel free to form your own opinions & conduct alternative tests if you feel my test do not address an aspect of any particular issue that you may feel is relevant towards obtaining more definitive answers and/or results.

PREFACE:

My sister & myself previously tested the effects of style defense bonuses/penalties in a PvE setting (against mobs) under our mutually shared (& now retired) username of Xanadu_13. The results of those PvE tests indicated to us that style defense bonus/penalties only affected the base hit/miss check after evade, parry, & block was already bypassed. Many players raised questions about how this carried over to RvR in the PvP melee environment, thus I ran a series of PvP duel tests today to see what would happen in that type PvP setting. Are players observations of greater or lesser evade/parry/block defenses after using specific styles just random variance of the game mechanics, or are they on the mark? Read on, & form your own conclusions one way or the other...

TESTING CONDITIONS:

Using my 50 Elf Pierce Shield Blademaster, I conducted 3 different test environments against the same 50 Saracen Flex/Shield Reaver (Weaponskill 1493). All the Reaver's attacks towards the BM were done unstyled to keep the integrity between the tests consistent & the results as accurate as possible. Both characters were fully buffed by my Level 50 Shaman with 37 Aug & MoArcane4 to simulate the RvR reality of fully buffed opponents. ALL the conditions for each test stayed exactly the same except as noted below in each test with regards to the BM attack styles. All equipment & armor used was lvl 51 & 35% enchanted.

TESTS RESULTS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the first attack test the BM used the Hib Pierce Taunt Style 100% (HIGH PENALTY to defense)...

Total Number of Attacks by Reaver During this test = 300
Total Number of Successful Hits by Reaver During this Test = 58 =19.33%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Evaded During this Test = 102 =34.0%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Parried During this Test = 80 = 26.66%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Blocked During this Test = 60 = 20.00%
Total Number of Outright Misses by Reaver During this Test = 0 = 0.000%

80.66% of all attacks by Reaver were Evaded, Parried, or Blocked during this test
00.00% (0) of 58 Attacks that bypassed Evade, Parry, & Block outright missed on base hit/miss check

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the second attack test the BM used only unstyled attacks 100% (NO penalty to defense)....

Total Number of Attacks by Reaver During this test = 300
Total Number of Successful Hits by Reaver During this Test = 43 = 14.33%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Evaded During this Test = 98 = 32.66%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Parried During this Test = 85 = 28.66%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Blocked During this Test = 58 = 19.33%
Total Number of Outright Misses by Reaver During this Test = 16 = 5.33%

80.33% of all attacks by Reaver were evaded, parried, or blocked during this test
27.12% (16) of 59 Attacks that bypassed Evade, Parry, & Block outright missed on base hit/miss check

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the third attack test the BM used the Hib Pierce Detaunt Style 100% (MEDIUM BONUS to defense)...

Total Number of Attacks by Reaver During this test = 300
Total Number of Successful Hits by Reaver During this Test = 35 = 11.66%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Evaded During this Test = 99 = 33.00%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Parried During this Test = 85 = 28.33%
Total Number of Reaver's Attacks Blocked During this Test = 61 = 20.33%
Total Number of Outright Misses by Reaver During this Test = 20 = 6.66%

81.66% of all attacks by Reaver were evaded, parried, or blocked during this test
36.36% (20) of 55 Attacks that bypassed Evade, Parry, & Block outright missed on base hit/miss check

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSIONS:

Notice how the overall difference in the BM evade/parry/block rates stayed virtually identical when going from a HIGH defense penalty style to a NO defense penalty unstyled melee situation. Even when comparing the difference in the HIGH PENALTY style test to the MED BONUS style test the overall total evade/parry/block rate difference is only 1.0%...& that's going from one extreme to the other. Any differences here can easily be attributed to random variance in testing more than anything else IMO. Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but the style defense bonus/penalties seemed to make virtually no difference in the overall evade/parry/block rate of the BM during these three tests.

The base hit/miss check, on the other hand, showed notable differences between each test & scaled directly in relation to what defensive bonus/penalty was been tested. This indicates to me that this is where the style defense bonus/penalty is being applied in the melee equation. Using this test as an example. the BM here would have been hit about 5 more times per 100 attacks in PvP while using her Taunt style instead of another style with no penalty to defense.

That pretty much sums it up. Look at the numbers & draw your own conclusions.
