The only thing the highest level verdant pet will get you is a higher level taunt spell. They all tank the same regardless of spec level in verdant. So spend the points in arboreal, it'll probably help you out more.

I went 49 verdant with my ani and i'm very well pleased with it. The difference that I noticed is that I can pull an entire weewere camp and pbae the suckers to death without having to cast my 15s abs buff. Before I went 49 verd my pet couldn't quite take it, was forced to use the 15s abs buff to keep it alive.

The L49 pet and the L5 pet can take exactly the same damage. They are the same level, they have the same absorb. The only difference is in the strength of the taunt spell.
Since we have our pet on passive 90% of the time, the L49 pet is totally not worth it.
