At only 44 with my VW, I noticed I can block HORDES of Archers with NS, but as soon as someone is higher than around 45° in front of me, they start getting through more often, if not with all arrows.
This fits in-line with NS working to 45° in both sides, left and right. Would be logical if it is coded as a cone, so 45° up and down too...
