/Location and Ground Assist |

Navigating the sectors of DAOC can be a daunting task. Whether you are trying to find a mob encounter or some friends, pinpointing the exact location you are seeking is difficult unless you know a few tricks of the navigation trade. /Location is an excellent way to find specific spots in a zone. Combined with /groundassist, it is also easy to find a friend or group anywhere they are - even if they are stealthed. Mythic sets every zone on a grid which number from 0-66.000 on both axes (west-east and north-south). The grid starts at the top left. Thus the very top left corner of each zone is 0,0. The very bottom right corner of each zone is 66.000,66.000. The /location system gives you the west-east component first followed by the north-south component. This is sometimes hard to remember when you are just learning the system. An easy way to remember is this: Do it just like you read a book: You read from left to right and top to bottom. Exactly the same as /location. To use /location, simply type in: /loc You will see a line appear which tells you what sector you are in followed by numbers which look like this: 35456,12324,2435 dir=270 You are concerned with the first two numbers. In this example, your west-east component is 35.456 and you north-south component is 12.324. The third set of numbers is your altitude (pretty much only useful if you are underwater). The 270 is the heading you are facing. 0 = North 90 = East 180 = South 270 = West If you understand the numerical conversions of compass headings, this number is useful. If such things confuse you, then just use the compass itself if you need to see which way you are moving. The most important numbers, however, are those first two, as they pinpoint your exact location in the zone. If you are trying to find a NPC Mob or camp or whatever, where you know their location, you can use /loc to hone in on your destination. To get to any specific location, type /loc first and see where you are. Compare the West-East portion first. If your target is a higher number than yours, you need to move to the East. If it is lower, you need to move to the West. Then compare the North-South component. If your target is lower, you need to move North. If it is higher, you need to move South. It is a good idea to practice a few times in a safe area before you try using the system in the frontier or a high-aggro PvE zone. Housing is a great place to practice. Pick out any house, stand by it,press /loc, and write down its coordinates. Now run off in any direction. The less you pay attention to where you are going the better. Stay in the same zone however. After you run off a ways stop and type /loc again. That is where you are now. Now compare the first set of numbers. Do you need to move East or West to get back to your target house? Remember, if the target is higher, you go East. If the target is lower, you go West. Next compare the second set. If the number is higher, go South. If the number is lower, go North. As you move, keep checking /loc every so often to make sure you are getting closer. With a little practice, you will soon find the system easy to use. It is even easier if the target you are seeking is an ally or group of allies. Have someone at the target location place a ground target. To so this, they press F5 and move their arrow keys just a tad. A yellow ground target will appear on the ground close them. They should do a /loc, too, so they can pass on the loc to people too far away to see the GT. Once the target is set, you tpye: /groundassist (name) where (name) is the name of the person who set the ground target. For example if you are trying to find me and I set a groundtarget (GT), once I tell you the GT is set, you would type: /groundassist Tazilon You will see a line of text saying you are on my GT. Unless you are close, you will not see it. However once you move within about 2500-3000 units of it and have Line of Sight, you will see the yellow target on the ground and can move to it. These two tools combined make finding friendlies in RvR extremely easy. If you are trying to rally a group of stealthers, using GT and /groundassist is a Godsend. Don't worry about dropping a bag. Don't wory about unstealthing and asking if people can see you. Just place a GT and let people /groundassist you. Your group can reform without ever breaking stealth. If someone is too far away to see the GT and there are no good landmarks nearby, use /loc to get the person close enough to see the GT. Some precautions: /location numbers are always 4-5 digits. If the number is only 4 digits, you read it is as: X.ddd If the number is 5 digits, you read it as XX.ddd Do not make the mistake of reading 3455 as 34.55. It isn't. It is 3.455. /location numbers do not extend across zones. Each zone has it's own grid. Be careful when using /loc if you are in one sector and your target is in another. Don't start trying to find his /loc until you are in his zone. Remember: /location gives you XXddd, XXddd, aaaa dir=hhh (Ex: 34567, 21326,4325 dir=090 - read as: 34.567, 21.326) The first set of numbers is West to East. The second set is North to South. Third is altitude. dir= direction you are facing. If you forget which is which, remember how you read a book: left to right (west to east) and top to bottom (north to south). To find someone using ground targets, have them place a GT by pressing F5 and holding down an arrow for just a sec. Then you type /groundassist (name) to set yourself to their GT. Look for the yellow target and use /loc if you aren't already nearby. With just a little practice, you will soon be a master of navigtion in DAOC. Even better, you will no longer have to drop an incriminating bag or unstealth to get your friends to rally in RvR. Happy Hunting! /faceloc Typing that in will return the values it requires. Use in conjunction with friendly's /locs "You all knew the [TL] reports were being skimmed at best, and not a high priority before he [Mackey] came on board." -- Sanya [ Zerg This Alliance | Hibernia | Lancelot ] |

F5 is the default for setting a ground target, not B, right? In any case, figure out what you settings are at and use that key. /groundassist has a shortcut /gr as well. Sometimes its still not easy to see, but you can raise the elevation of the GT as well so you can find the yellow dot in the sky. Can be helpful when you need to find a GT in a hilly area where you don't have much los on the landscape. And yes, they are very useful if you run in a stealth group. I use /gr every day. -------------------- I've been trying To justify you In the end I will just defy you |

Yes, /faceloc works well if you know a location. And F5 may be default - i might need to edit that. I have changed around so many of my keys for qbinds, you all will have to thump me on the head whenever I give you one that I have changed.
