OK, did some testing before but was limited to pre-1.75B Neg Maelstrom and the DoT/DD testing I did wasn't extensive enough. So here goes the new information:



Part I - Negative Maelstrom

FINDINGS:

- First off, all of the testing was done by my lvl 50 Mentalist, Emfili, with no gear or alternate realm abilities in play. After putting on my RvR gear and selecting a few other RAs (Aug Acuity/Mastery of Magery), I found that neither ToA bonuses, stat bonuses from items, or damage increasing RAs affect the damage done by Negative Maelstrom. As these tests were done versus a mob with 0% resists to begin with, I am unsure how "resist piercing" will factor in the equation. Also, no power relics were in play so this was all done with a 0% bonus.

- Now then, the frequency on the ability is extremely slow. 4.5s combined with the low area of effect (350 units) makes it incredibly easy to avoid and makes it even more difficult to use to full effectiveness. While it has no visible graphic, it is still rather easy to stay away from as people are constantly moving around in RvR.

- Regarding 1.75B where the delves were increased, while the delve of NM2 and NM3 have indeed been increased, NM1 still remains at its prior level...I'm guessing when this is corrected that it'll delve at around 180 to 200 possibly. Though there is the possibility that this is in fact the correct delve.

- As stated in my last testing with Negative Maelstrom, the last tick does not seem to increase as it should. In some of my tests, the last tick actually did less than the prior. And in most of my tests, it only did 5-10 points of damage more.

- The one realm ability that does impact Negative Maelstrom is "Wild Power". Each tick of the ability has a chance to critical (and it does happen from time to time). The higher your WP, the greater the chance of doing added damage per tick.

- Unlike conventional DoTs (which NM is not), a critical on any one tick has no affect on the following ticks.

- Tests were also done with varying specs in Light and Mana and the results were that neither your spec choice nor spec level, even going over a modified 50, modifies the damage done.



CONCLUSIONS:

- The boost in damage dealt makes this a little more tantilizing realm ability. Though even with the increase, it still is affected by the fact that 1) you can simply move out of the small area of effect (350 unit radius), 2) it has a 2 second casting time meaning that it cannot be cast on the run, 3) it requires a ground target which brings in its own problems with LOS, and 4) is has a "lag" timer on it meaning that even after casting the spell will not go off for another 3 seconds which further enhances the issues caused by #1.

- The new "delve" on the Herald will, when released, read 30/60/90 now instead of 20/40/60 <--- MAJOR importance

- The slow frequency needs to be addressed and adjusted to 3.5s or faster. Even though there is no spell effect to indicate to players that they're in the zone, most players will see that their friends are being attacked as well and move. As such, the faster the frequency, the less likely it is for people to avoid the spell and the greater probability of this being used to max effectiveness.

- With the requirement of a ground location, the "lag" timer, and no secondary effect, this greatly limits the scope in which it can be used. The hinderances of this ability restrict its usefulness to primary defensive positions. With the encouragement of players to fight less around keeps/towers and seek out open field battles, this ability seems less and less likely to be used. It does in fact shine when used in conjuction with Thorn Weed Field and Static Tempest, though having to rely on a secondary realm ability to maximize the potential of another seems unnecessary.

- Definitely an eye opener and something I'd think about purchasing but some things still need to be addressed.

FINDINGS:

- Increased Acuity ha absolutely no affect on the damage cap of a DoT spell. This means that the only way to increase the potential damage of this spell is via Mastery of Magery and the TOA +damage bonuses. And even then, the increase in cap is quite small (about 15% for MoM5, roughly 2.25% per level of MoM as average).

- Aug Acuity has little to no value in increasing the damage potential of the DoT spells.

- As strange as it turned out, the level of the testing mob did not affect the damage per tick on the DoTs. This finding still bothers me.

- Against a fully resistance buffed target, DoTs failed to make much of an impact on my test target. Even with Mastery of Magery 5, against a 46% resistance buffed target, I only increased my damage potential by 7-10 points per tick.



CONCLUSIONS:

- While my testing was done with my character completely naked, it does indeed show that the damage boosting RAs are not worth the points for a DOT caster. In fact, the RA of choice continues to be Wild Power as a means of increasing your damage output.

- Mild levels of Mastery of Magery/Aug Acuity are recommended so that the damage of the back base lind DD can be increased to be a more formidable back-up weapon.

- Resist Piercing from Trials of Atlantis will be the God-send of the DoT caster. Without that bonus and any other bonus that they player can get their hands on, the damage potential is going to be extremely lacking and will force the player to rely more on the base lind DD as a means of consistent damage output.

- DoTs are in need of a necessary boost; having to cast two spells (and spec in two lines in the case of the Mentalist) is absurd when you conside the power cost and the damage netted from doing so.

FINDINGS:

- Much like DoTs, increased Acuity has absolutely no affect on the damage cap of a DD spell. This means that the only way to increase the potential damage of this spell is via Mastery of Magery and the TOA +damage bonuses.

- While increased Acuity doesn't increase the cap potential of the spell, it does add a damage bonus after all parts of the equation are factored.

- Strangely enough, when doing the PvE testing vs the test mobs outside of TNN, each level of Aug Acuity added the same amount of damage as an equal level of Mastery of Magery. This has me perplexed.

CONCLUSIONS:

- There isn't anything I found in the above testing that doesn't show something that we didn't already know. BUT, as can be seen, gear makes an insane difference. Unlike with DoTs, in the PvE testing, it seemed as if one point of Acuity equals out to one point of damage.

- In the grand scheme of purchasing realm abilities, Mastery of Magery takes precedence over all other RAs. BUT, each RA should be bought in equal level to the others meaning that if you purchase MoM 1 that you should purchase Aug Acuity 1 before buying MoM 2. The reasoning behind this is that you get a better return on value of points spent as your damage over time stays consistant. Plus the return on value of Aug Acuity beyond damage is that it increases your power pool if only slightly.

- The "fall off" effect of the AE DD spells is horrendous. Even though the cap, while naked, on both AE spells tested was 369/476 respectively, I failed to kill a Minor Changeling (level 4 mob) that was on the fringe of the spell area. In fact, when it turned on me, it was at approximately 80% life.

I noticed this awhile back and just assumed DoTs don't get affected by the target's level--greys don't die in a single tick, and higher con still seems to take about the same amount. Though my experience with hitting higher con mobs is pretty limited ("Hey, what's your DoT hitting for?"), as my ment is Mind spec and can't solo anything higher than a green anyway. Maybe go set ol' Slash to level 60 and see if you hit for about the same amount; could be more of an advantage than a drawback.

DoTs hit for the same amount regardless of mob level. Kinda handy in the epic encounters if enough animists are there to make them hitable with a DoT. Get ready to run if you land a DoT on a critter your melee is plinking for 1-10 damage. hehe!!

Just a quick reply on this one but 4.5s is the correct frequency for NF Negative Maelstorm.

OF Negative Maelstorm had a 3.0s pulse frequency.

Part IV: Master Ability Testing (specifically Leadership)

Spells used:
lvl 34 AE DD - Innundation of Illusion
lvl 35 DD - Bedazzling Visions
lvl 44 AE DD - Cataclysm of Illusion
lvl 45 DD - Curruscating Visions
lvl 50 DD - Aurora Blast (base line)

lvl 36 AE DoT - Torrent of Dementia
lvl 41 DoT - Mind Annihilation
lvl 46 AE DoT - Storm of Insanity
lvl 48 DoT - Complete Mind Annihilation

PVE TESTING

Emfili
Level 50 - RR4L5
ML10 Warlord
48 + 3 Mana / 48 + 3 Light
115 Acuity (naked)

Performed 20 casts of all spells listed vs both lvl 1 mobs (took some time due to the down time on the ability) and Slash, the level 50 test mob outside of TNN.

FINDINGS:

- Did not see an increase in the damage cap of the spells used OR did I see an improved amount of damage vs the level 50 test mob.



CONCLUSIONS:

- I do not see any impact on PvE performance when using this ability. Will need to do some additional testing through RvR to see if this does have an impact but I can do that on the live server, additional information to follow.
